The slippery elm is a large, deciduous tree that is native to North America.
Slippery elm bark added to room temperature water has a slippery and mucilaginous consistency.
It is mucilaginous and therefore a very good demulcent. It is used to add moisture or soothe irritated tissue and can be found in many natural throat lozenges
Digestive Issues: Slippery elm has been used to address digestive disturbances, it acts as a gentle supportive agent to the intestines and promotes healthy mucosal tissue.
Sore Throat: Slippery elm contains chemicals that can help soothe sore throats.
Acid Reflux: Acid reflux can happen when your lower esophageal sphincter doesn’t seal and close off your esophagus from your stomach. This allows the contents in your stomach to come back up your esophageal tract, leading to an inflamed esophagus.
Those who experience acid reflux often may have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This condition can lead to more serious health problems, including damage to your esophagus.
Slippery elm coats the esophagus and stomach to relieve discomfort caused by acid reflux. The gel coats and soothes inflamed tissue. This coating can act as a barrier against acidity. Slippery elm can also stimulate the intestines to produce mucus.
Ulcer: Slippery elm causes reflux stimulation of nerve endings in the gastrointestinal tract leading to increased mucus secretion. The increased mucus production may protect the gastrointestinal tract against ulcers and excess acidity.
Vaginal Dryness : Slippery Elm Bark is amazing for those that are suffering from vaginal dryness and low cervical mucus. The mucilage moistens and soothes, while the herb's tannins are astringent, making slippery elm ideal to soothe inflammations, reduce swelling, moisten vagina and heal damaged tissues.
Gastritis: Slippery elm is high in mucilage, which is advantageous for people with gastritis because its slippery nature soothes irritated mucus membranes of the digestive tract. Use with other Demulcent herbs, such as marshmallow root.
Orally administered drugs should be taken one hour prior to or several hours after consumption of slippery elm. The mucilage may slow the absorption of orally administered drugs.
