Used for over 5000 years, neem leaves are one of the most common remedies used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine.
In fact, approximately 75% of Ayurvedic medicines contain some form of neem! Indians exalt the neem tree as sacred and refer to it as "the village pharmacy", due to its many uses.
In India, it is thought that the each part of the neem tree has a different medicinal property.
The tree is still regarded as the 'village dispensary' in India. It was recognized in Indian culture that neem has the potential for an abundance of medicinal applications. So much so that the neem tree was recognized by the National Academy of Sciences. In 1992, this extremely reputable organization, founded by Alexander Dallas Bache and Abraham Lincoln, published a report entitled "Neem – a tree for solving global problems".
More than 135 compounds have been isolated from various components of neem. Today, this has led to many commercial formulated products such as garden spray, insect and pest repellant, skin care products, acne remedies, hair oil, and head lice shampoo.
Neem oil, bark and leaf extracts have been therapeutically used as alternative medicine to possibly support the body's natural healing response to leprosy, intestinal helminthiasis, respiratory disorders, constipation, rheumatism, chronic syphilitic sores, and indolent ulcers.

Neem preparations are reportedly efficacious against a variety of skin diseases, septic sores, and infected burns. As a contraceptive
For men: A study on Contraception has revealed that aqueous extract of neem leaves has spermicidal activity at a dose of 3-mg and more consumed per day. According to the study, aqueous extract of neem leaves not only immobilized the sperm but also killed 100% of human spermatozoa within 20 seconds. It further revealed that the minimum effective spermicidal concentrations of neem leaves are less than 2.9 mg/million sperms.
For Women: A journal shows the contraceptive effects of intrauterine neem treatment (IUNT) as anAn alternate to intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUCD)
Neem alters the estrous cycle, by prolonging the duration of the diestrus phase and subsequently lowering the frequency at which the estrus phase occurs. Consequently the frequency of ovulation is reduced and fertility may therefore be impaired.
