Glycyrrhiza glabra is an herbaceous legume that is native to the Middle East, southern Europe, and India. Licorice, sometimes spelled liquorice, is a favorite ingredient to sweeten herbal tea blends and is often used as a flavoring agent in candy.
Licorice root is one of the most widely used herbs worldwide and is the single most used herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine today.
Numerous studies have revealed many pharmacological activities of licorice, such as antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antitumor and antimicrobial.
Among the pharmacological activities of licorice mentioned above, the antiviral and antimicrobial activities have been most commonly reported. The development of safe and effective antiviral or antimicrobial agents is very important, and licorice deserves more attention for its outstanding activities
Hepatitis C
GL is one of the major compounds isolated from the roots of licorice. In recent years, many studies have confirmed the antiviral activity of GL. Matsumoto et al. reported that GL targeted the release step in which infectious anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) particles were infecting cells. These findings indicated possible novel roles for GL to treat patients suffering from chronic hepatitis C.
Weight Management
Research demonstrates that individuals had a significant reduction in body fat mass after using three grams of licorice root extract consistently for 2 months
Nevertheless, the eating of licorice root isn’t something that anyone should do for long periods of time
It is preferred to use licorice for 5 days; then take a 1 week break throughout the two months weight-loss interval
Acid Reflux, Heartburn and GERD
Licorice root is often used to relieve symptoms of indigestion, such as acid reflux, upset stomach, and heartburn.
In a 30-day study in 50 adults with indigestion, taking a 75-mg licorice capsule twice daily resulted in significant improvements in symptoms.
Licorice root may also alleviate symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), including acid reflux and heartburn.
Another study in 58 adults with GERD noted that the daily use of licorice root was more effective at reducing symptoms over a 2-year period than commonly used antacids.
Hypotension(Low Blood Pressure)
Licorice: a classic remedy for hypotension,it contains a compound that increases the fluid in blood which can balance blood pressure. Taking licorice tea/capsules in the morning helps raise low blood pressure.
Peptic Ulcer
Peptic ulcers are painful sores that develop in your stomach, lower esophagus, or small intestine. They’re commonly caused by inflammation resulting from H. pylori bacteria
Licorice root extract and its glycyrrhizin has shown great usefulness in treating peptic ulcers.
The flavonoids present can help with discomfort and inflammation of the digestive system
Due to their anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, both licorice root extract and tea may aid upper respiratory conditions.
Menopause and PMS
Licorice root helps to regulate the productions of hormones estrogen and progesterone. licorice helps eliminate or alleviate many symptoms such as irritability, hot flashes, and cramps.
Cervical Mucus
Demulcent, promotes healthy mucus membrane secretions. Encourages hormonal balance by supporting the endocrine system.
Sinus and Congestion
Licorice is a natural alternative to antibiotics for the treatment of either bacterial or viral sinusitis. Pair it with ginger to resolve the imbalances associated with respiratory infections. Ginger helps to resolve the inflammation that takes place in the throat and can help resolve a runny nose, nasal congestion, and coughing while Licorice is taken to aid in the act of expectoration and can help with congestion and coughs.
PCOS
Licorice may reduce facial hair in women suffering from Pcos. Use with Zinc, Green Tea, Reishi mushroom, Saw palmetto, Spearmint , Vitex . Females with PCOS have elevated levels of male hormones. This causes a specific set of symptoms, including irregular or heavy menstrual periods, excess body and facial hair, and acne
