Beta vulgaris is the plump, earthy-yet-sweet root commonly known and enjoyed as a vegetable.
For centuries, beet root, which is also commonly spelled as beetroot, has been highly regarded in various cultures for its nutritive and wellness-supporting qualities.
Beets have the highest sugar content of all the vegetables and have been popularized as a sweetening substitute, earning it the name of sugar beet. Beet juice and beet powder are used to flavor carrot, celery, and other vegetable juices. Beet juice is also utilized as a natural coloring agent in a variety of foods.
Rich, earthy, and sweet, beet roots lend their flavor well to both savory and dessert dishes. Additionally, beets can be blended into smoothies or infused in herbal teas. One of our favorite ways of enjoying dried beet root is to simply snack on them.
Beetroots are loaded with iron, minerals and vitamins, that are beneficial to repair and reactivate red blood cells, which in turn increase the oxygen supply. Beetroot juice topped with carrots, and amla is an excellent combination to fight low haemoglobin levels.
Sickle Cell Disease
Beetroot, known for its rich nutrient profile, has been explored for its potential benefits in managing sickle cell disease (SCD). The high nitrate content in beetroot is particularly noteworthy, as it can be converted into nitric oxide (NO) in the body, a molecule that plays a crucial role in vascular health.
Potential Benefits of Beetroot for Sickle Cell Disease:
1. Enhanced Blood Flow: Nitric oxide helps dilate blood vessels, improving circulation. For individuals with SCD, this can aid in reducing the risk of vaso-occlusive crises, where sickle-shaped cells block blood flow.
2. Improved Oxygen Delivery: By enhancing blood flow, beetroot-derived nitrates may facilitate better oxygen delivery to tissues, potentially alleviating symptoms like fatigue associated with SCD.
3. Reduction in Blood Pressure: The vasodilatory effect of nitric oxide can lead to lower blood pressure, which is beneficial for overall cardiovascular health.
Research Insights:
• A study conducted at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo demonstrated that five days of dietary nitrate supplementation via beetroot juice improved exercise tolerance in a mouse model of SCD. This suggests potential benefits in enhancing physical performance and reducing fatigue in individuals with SCD.
• Another study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of daily beetroot juice intake in patients with SCD. The researchers hypothesized that increasing plasma nitrite through dietary nitrate would improve platelet function and red cell deformability. However, this study was withdrawn before completion, and thus, conclusive results are unavailable.
In summary, beetroot’s high nitrate content and its conversion to nitric oxide present promising avenues for supporting vascular health in individuals with sickle cell disease.
