MOST IMPORTANT SUPPLEMENTS IV
Which is why we have gone ahead to be proactive with these series.
We are sharing what we consider the most important supplements and why, to guide you in making the best choice on supplementing.
Today our focus is on Folate- not to be confused for folic acid but that’s a topic for another day
Folate also known as vitamin B9 is an ESSENTIAL nutrient for the human body. It is important in red blood cell formation and for healthy cell growth and function.
Folate is CRUCIAL during early pregnancy to reduce the risk of birth defects of the brain and spine and this is why we consider this one of the most important supplements especially for women of reproductive age.
50% of pregnancies are unplanned and ideally, folate should be started three months before conception — to help ensure women get enough of this essential nutrient to prevent neural tube defects in babies.
Many foods naturally contain folate, such as dark-green leafy vegetables, beans, whole grains, and eggs.
Fruits rich in folate include oranges, lemons, bananas, melons and strawberries.
The synthetic form of folate is folic acid and whilst food manufacturers add folic acid to foods to fortify them with this important vitamin we recommend in its natural form( Folate) as it’s easily absorbed in the body and used better by the body.
